Understanding The Basics Of SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a way to place your website high in search results for a relevant topic. The basis is a whole series of technical and content measures, which are determined by the operation of the search engines. Key points include usability, loading speeds, relevance, easy-to-read and information-rich texts, images and video contents, and the use of relevant keywords on your website. You will find all you need to pay attention to improve your search rankings in my guide. If you have questions about my guide, I will be happy to help you with my know-how.

Guide For Current Search Engine Optimization

Basically SEO measures work because Google and other search engines regularly visit your site and rate it. This results in the search engine result placement (SERP) of your website. This happens automatically through so-called bots as well as with the help of algorithms and artificial intelligence. The algorithms behind Google search have evolved extensively in recent years. In the past, it was possible to achieve a good placement in Google search results on a specific topic with relatively simple tricks.

Today, search engine optimization for a website is more user-oriented. Today it is important to understand the intentions of the user and to deliver really suitable, high-quality content and products. We will go into this comprehensively in our SEO tutorial and give you a guide for optimization.

SEO Tutorial:

How Beginners Optimize Their Website For Search Engines AND Users

If a user searches for one or more terms, Google and other search engines automatically check how well your website fits and assign them a place in the search result accordingly. Since around 98 percent of Google users find what they are looking for on the first page, search engine optimization is both necessary and challenging. With My guide to search engine optimization, you can optimize your website and rank well on your relevant topic. Because it is not a witchcraft to develop a good SEO strategy and to end up in front of other websites in the Google search result.

In this free step-by-step guide, you’ll learn important basics, tips and tricks that you can put into practice.

What Are On-Page SEO And Off-Page SEO?

A possible classification of search engine optimization is the distinction between On Page optimization and off-page optimization. On Page optimization takes place directly on the website. Off page Optimization means all measures that include other websites and social networks. In my step-by-step guide, I’ll explain how you can optimize your page on and off-page.

OnPage optimization is about making your page easy to find and user-friendly. Both factors are related because Google and other search engines use a whole range of metrics to incorporate user behavior to the quality of the website. These include, for example, the length of time you spend on your website and the way users move through your navigation.

Important Things About On Page Optimization In This SEO Guide

An essential part of SEO techniques for off page optimization aims to accommodate so-called backlinks, i.e. links to your website on other websites. This process is also known as backlink setup. Care must be taken to Google evaluates the quality of links and punishes websites that distribute their links on the Internet in a spam-like manner. Especially link networks and dubious offers for link exchange you should avoid. A great way to get backlinks are high-quality articles on well-known blogs and posts on social networks. You can find out how to choose a good link text and the right attributes in step 5 of My step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Instructions For Technical SEO

Search engine optimization starts with the choice of domain for your site. If possible, the page URL should contain your main keyword. A company name as a page URL (e.g.searchengineland.com) does not provide Google with any information and therefore does not lead to a good placement in the search results pages, the SERPs.

SEO Guide for Navigation and Links

Navigation and links are just as important for search engine optimization. The navigation should therefore be clear and user-friendly. The links to each sub-item ideally contain the most important keywords for your topic. If you use a content management system like WordPress, you can use a WordPress SEO plugin like Yoast SEO or RankMath to optimize your links as part of On Page SEO optimization. You can find instructions on this tool on the Yoast SEO website.

Another important technical aspect is charging speeds. So pay attention to the file sizes for your content, keep your system up-to-date and use the leanest possible programming structure. The WordPress content management system is SEO-friendly and makes it easier for you to optimize your website.

Many websites are accessed via mobile devices such as tablets or smartphones. The keyword here is Mobile first. Here, not only the loading speed, but also the responsive web design is important. This standard ensures that your website adapts to the screen size. If you have a new website designed, you should not do without this form of optimization.

Structured Data Guide

Another aspect of technical search engine optimization, which I present in My SEO tutorial, is structured data. They provide Google and other search engines with information about what kind of information certain parts in the content are. Imagine a fictitious company called Orange Inc. you use the structured data to code the name as the company name, Google knows that orange is not the fruit or color. Structured data allows you to distinguish addresses, phone numbers, postal codes, and more. The major search engine providers have agreed on a uniform standard for this, which you can find on the portal schema.org.

Structured data also forms the basis for rich snippets. This refers to the previews at Google, which contain information such as opening hours, telephone number and the like.

Step 2: SEO Guide For Texts Optimizations

SEO-optimized texts contribute significantly to the good placement in the search result. This is partly because algorithms can process the texts better than images, videos and other content.

Before you write or have texts written, you should answer two essential questions:

1. What are relevant keywords?

2. With what intention does the user come to the respective webpages?

1. SEO Tutorial: Find Relevant Keywords

For this SEO tutorial, let’s take as an example that you’re working in the e-commerce business and run an online shop for car parts that you want to optimize. Then you should know if your target group is looking for the terms car accessories, car accessories, accessories for car, car equipment or Ford accessories. What is relatively simple in this example becomes challenging in other industries and with a large product base. For small projects, the content of the competitors and the auto-completion of Google offer first points of contact for research. For larger projects, you should use a tool for optimization. This also makes it easier to identify best practices.

You should divide the keywords into main and minor keywords. You don’t have to take these words all one-to-one. Google recognizes grammatical bending, different spellings and synonyms very well. Nevertheless, you should include the keywords in your texts for optimization. However, the terms alone do not lead to success.

With a text that is actually about motorcycles, but still contains the above example keywords, your website will not reach a good position in the search result. The reason for this is the so-called semantic networks of texts. The search engines use the text structure and the words used to determine whether all the text or only the keywords match the search query.

Which are the most important terms varies depending on the bottom. In My fictitious example, automotive accessories could be very important for the home page. When you set up a bottom for snow chains, terms such as snow chains for golf, cheap snow chains or snow chains with quick-release closures come to the fore.

Beginner’s SEO Guide for Keyword Research

You can do keyword research intuitively as a beginner and on small projects. With common sense and a little feeling for the search engines, you can achieve good results in search engine optimization. For larger projects, e.g. from the e-commerce sector, you usually can’t avoid a software tool.

There is no specific value for how often you should use the keywords in a text. Exaggerate it, Google rates your website as spam and downgrades it. Your text should be easy to read and natural. Ideally, you’ll put the keywords and/or their synonyms evenly distributed in the text, headings, and meta description. The ideal text length also depends very much on the type of text and your competitors. In My fictitious example, you could write a home page text with about 300 words in which about 2 percent of the terms are your main keyword or a synonym. For a blog post about snow chains you could write 700 or 1200 words. The most important for SEO-optimized texts: Write primarily for the reader. Relies on readability, high information density, avoid filling words and keep a common thread.

2. The User Intention

So you used keyword research to find out which terms are important for your content. The next step in this guide will explain why the intent of your Site’s users is important.

The user’s intention determines how you should build the content on a particular topic. For this SEO tutorial we assume you are creating a landing page on the topic of snow chains. Then you could discuss the advantages and disadvantages of individual models on the page and offer a kind of sales advice. Users who search for the keyword mentioned usually have a specific purchase intention. If you inform them about specific models, the probability of a purchase is increased. If, on the other hand, you were to present content on the history of snow chains on this subpage, few users will be interested.

In e-commerce, users are usually in the information, decision-making or purchase phase. Before creating content on a topic, think about which phase you want to optimize your texts for and with which questions, emotions, foreknowledge and feelings of the users ends up on your page (or bottom). Get it where it stands with your content and take it where you want it to be. Taking into account the user’s intention is important so that users not only end up on your site, but also perform the desired action.

Important: Under no circumstances may you copy texts or parts of them. Google recognizes this duplicate content and immediately punishes you.

You can use the Google Analytics tool to determine important metrics such as the click-through rate (CTR) of your page. The Google Analytics tool is so extensive that we don’t elaborate on the topic as part of this step-by-step guide to SEO.

Step 3: SEO Guide For Image Optimization

Google and other search engines are increasingly learning to recognize the content of images. Since this only works in the basics, the search engines are taking detours. For example, you can see what the image file is called, what is in the caption and in which folder the image file is stored. The old text is also important. This is a kind of image description that can be read out by browsers and, for example, helps blind people. Search engines also use this information.

For SEO, it makes sense to describe the image in a few words in the old text of the file and to accommodate keywords in a dosed form. An example: VW Golf five with snow chains. The same applies to the name of the image. You should also name the folder in which you place the images within the website, so that your pictures are as high as possible in the search result. In My example, the folder might be called Snow Chains.

Search engines like short loading times. This also applies to pictures. Therefore, they should not be too big. Ideal are about 150 kB. If you want to present larger images, you can first display them as a thumbnail and then link them to a larger version. This allows you to use another SEO option. Because if you use an image file several times on your page, Google Search and other search engines probably rate it as popular, which can give you an advantage in image search.

How you insert the alt text for images depends on your content management system. WordPress is SEO-friendly and you can therefore insert the old text directly into the library. The WordPress SEO plugin Yoast SEO offers you further possibilities for search engine optimization. It is a useful tool for OnPage SEO optimization.

Step 4: SEO Guide To Metadata

The meta description is very important for SEO. That’s why we dedicate a separate section to her in My step-by-step guide. The meta description includes Title and Description. The title is the blue heading in the Google search results, the description is the text below. You can enter both details for each subpage of your website. For WordPress SEO, this is possible with an SEO plugin like the Yoast SEO toolRankMath SEO tool. If you don’t create the information yourself, Google will compile it from your page’s content, which is often no advantage. The metadata is the first thing a user of your website sees and gives you the opportunity to animate them to visit via the Google search results.

The title should be the most important keyword of the page. A sensible addition can be a first call-to-action, your company name or other information. An example: buy cheap snow chains online in the shop of … !

It is important that your meta-description contains no more than 155 characters and attracts the interest of readers to click and read your post on the web.

In the Description you should convince the user at first glance and with a few words from your website. He has to see in the search result that he finds exactly what he is looking for with you. In addition to words, you can also use characters and symbols such as crosses, hoes or stars.

The following applies to metadata, which applies to search engine optimization in general: no spamming. Avoid over-accommodated the keyword or fill the title with keywords only. To optimize the meta description, you can use a tool such as https://seoprofiler.com

Step 5: Instructions For External And Internal Linking

Internal links on your website and links that point to your page from other websites are an important factor for search engine optimization. Here, too, you should think primarily of the users and link in such a way that the links offer added value.

An internal link refers to a reference from one sub page to another sub page. For example, you can link to individual items in a category description. From individual articles you can link to alternatives or to guide pages. But don’t overdo it and use the links only in doses as part of your SEO strategy.

External links are also good for your SEO online marketing and should be part of your SEO strategy. However, in order to optimize your website for Google and other search engines, you should not buy links en masse. This quickly leads to punishment by the search engines. It is therefore better to make as natural links as possible. For example, you can write informative blog articles for other websites and place a link in them. Posts on social networks are also a way to link.

The link text is important for search engine optimization. Let’s stick to the example from My guide to illustrate and assume you’ve written a blog article about snow chains for another website. Your link could look like this: “You can find out more about concrete models in the Snow Chain Purchase Guide from Example Company!” This is how the search engines know what the link is all about. For example, if you wrote “You can find out more here!”, The search engines could not do much with it.

SEO for Links: Choose Attributes Correctly

The links from other websites to your website are positive if the site is serious and ranks well. You too should only link to serious pages. If you want to mention a link but don’t want to use it for search engine optimization because the page is a negative example of something, you can mark the link with the so-called no-follow attribute. This is a simple HTML code in the source text that tells the search engines not to pay attention to this link.

With the Google Analytics tool, you can find out which websites are linking to your page. If you discover a link that may harm you, you have two options. On the one hand, you can ask the webmaster to remove the link. On the other hand, you can devalue the link with the tool Google Tag Manager.
